When I was young
When I look at a newborn or a young child, and I marvel at the soft, lovely look and feel of that baby soft skin, I am instantaneously jealous. I remember those days when I would look in the mirror and see a flawless face staring back at me. Of course I didn’t realize then how much I would long to have those days back. Life was carefree and largely non-judgmental. Only now, being older and wiser, do I realize what I had back them. I also realize how much our appearance can shape our thoughts and self-confidence, as well as shape the expectations of those around us.
As we age, I think it’s safe to say that we have all experienced this feeling at one time or another. While most of us vow to age gracefully, there are things we can do to help slow down the process. Botox can help to diminish the appearance of the lines and wrinkles that make us look older.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin A. Because it is purified, there is no risk of botulism, so there is no need to be concerned. It is an injectable solution that is reconstituted in very specific concentrations. When injected, it acts to soften frown lines and wrinkles by blocking the nerve receptors in the facial muscles, essentially paralyzing the muscle.
The injection takes from 1 – 3 days to become effective with the maximum effect being reached between 5 – 10 days. It lasts approximately 4 months, at which point the muscle develops new nerve receptors in place of those that were blocked by the injection. Botox works best on the wrinkles that appear when the muscle contracts. These are called “dynamic expression lines”. The glabellar line(s), the frown lines that appear between your eyebrows, is a common injection site, as well as the crows feet. Wrinkles that occur due to gravity and the skins loss of elasticity can only be minimally helped by Botox, although it will soften their appearance.
The Art of Aging Gracefully
If you’re looking to defy the aging process just a little, Botox may be right for you. Talk to your physician about it. Only you and your physician can determine the best course of action based on your desired outcome.
Keep it natural, boost your self-confidence and enjoy that youthful look and feel!
