What is LASIK?
LASIK, an acronym for Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a type of laser eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Using a computer controlled excimer laser to reshape your cornea and correct your vision, LASIK offers rapid recovery and minimal discomfort.
The decision to undergo LASIK laser vision correction is one that should not be taken lightly. While it can be a life changing procedure for many patients, it is not without risk. Each patient should take the time to do some preliminary research and familiarize themselves with the procedure. Understanding the basics better prepares the patient for the initial consultation or exam, and any questions that may arise or information given will be better comprehended, and an informed decision can be made whether or not to schedule the LASIK procedure.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?
If you:
- are 18 or older
- have no systemic illness such as diabetes, glaucoma or rheumatoid arthritis
- have healthy eyes
- have stable refraction (your prescription has not changed in 24 months)
- have realistic expectations about what LASIK can do for your vision.
then you are likely a good candidate for LASIK surgery. However, a thorough eye exam is necessary to confirm this.

What will happen during my consultation?
Our LASIK eye surgeon will perform a complete eye examination that includes computer-aided corneal topography, or a 'mapping' of the eye's surface to determine your corneal shape. After asking you a series of questions about your lifestyle, including work and leisure vision requirements, your eye surgeon will discuss options and recommendations for your LASIK surgery.

How long is the LASIK procedure?
Each eye takes about ten minutes.

Does LASIK hurt?
This is a commonly asked question. LASIK should not cause you any pain. Numbing eye drops will block any painful sensations, and you will be given a mild sedative so that, although you are awake, you won't feel anything. While your eye may feel a bit scratchy afterwards, no pain medications are usually required and you should be able to return to work or regular activities the next day.

Will there be any restrictions?
For the first week, you must wear protective eye shields to bed. You will not be allowed to swim for about one week following your LASIK procedure, but may bathe and shower. The use of eye makeup is restricted for the first week as well. Exercise and all other activities are allowed beginning the day after surgery. Our surgeon will want to see you the day following your procedure, and then at intervals of 1 week and various times during the first year to check on your progress. Our surgeon will determine how often you will need to return depending on your individual situation.

What side effects can I expect?
For most patients, vision fluctuates for the first few days following the LASIK procedure. Some patients notice glare around lights at night, called 'halo'. Some patients experience dry eyes. For most patients these side effects are temporary and disappear completely within two weeks of the procedure.

What are the risks?
Like all surgical procedures, LASIK does carry some risk, including infection that might damage your cornea or result in some vision loss. However, we want to emphasize that LASIK is approved by the FDA and is one of the most common and most safe procedures in the medical field, and complications are rare. During your evaluation with our skilled eye surgeon, you will be provided with a document called Informed Consent, outlining potential risks and complications of your LASIK surgery.

Are the effects of the LASIK procedure permanent?
Yes. Unlike some other refractive procedures, LASIK is permanent.
